Here we take a look at the New York Jets signing of Quincy  Enunwa and how keeping him around is a good idea as the team moves forward.

Well, the bad news out of this deal, at least for some of the New York Jets fan base, is that it looks like Mike Maccagnan is going to remain as the general manager. The good news is that his latest move is a good one.

For anyone who still hasn’t heard, the Jets have re-signed Quincy Enunwa to a four-year, $36 million contract. Per Adam Schefter, $20 million is guaranteed for the Jets wide receiver.

Now, as of the writing of this post we don’t have the year by year specifics on the deal. We don’t know if the Jets wrote in an “out” for themselves after two years. Even without that knowledge, however, the move on its face is a solid one.

More from Empire Writes Back

First of all, they didn’t overpay. Per Rich Cimini from ESPN, the per year average ranks him 25th at the position and his guarantees land him 18th.

We can talk about how players make too much money. The trouble is that goes for all of them. They really don’t have a way of shaking that narrative.

The real question is whether a player is being paid at market value. It’s the only comparison that can be made fairly.

Being ranked in the two categories, the guarantees and the salary, in the middle of the pack is completely accurate.

Even if you forget the contract per se, making this move is basically a no-brainer. To double down on what Alex Jordan wrote, Sam Darnold is the reason why.

The Jets are notorious for hurting the development of their young quarterbacks. That isn’t just a coaching issue. It’s also a weapons issue.

Remember what they did with Mark Sanchez? His weapons were a revolving door, between Braylon Edwards, Santonio Holmes, Plaxico Burress, Dustin Keller and so many others.

Not that Sanchez was Peyton Manning but the team made it difficult for him to establish chemistry with his weapons on the outside.

Re-signing Enunwa gives Darnold and him the chance to really make big things happen in the years going forward.

Now, there is one way this contract could turn the wrong direction. The deal must have an “out” after two years.

Why? The injury problems. The fact of the matter is that Enunwa has not been able to stay on the field over the last two seasons. He missed all of last year and only played 11 games in 2018.

Despite only playing 11 games, he is tied for second on the team with 38 receptions and third on the team with 449 receiving yards. Clearly “Q” is productive when he is on the football field.

He may be the best selection that John Idzik made as the general manager.

As long as the deal is set up well from the team perspective as well as the player, it’s a good move.

We will likely put an update on this contract in the coming days as details become available.
