The New York Jets bright future was on display for all to see, despite the fact that the team suffered an overtime loss to the Packers.

The future is bright for the fans of the New York Jets. Despite the loss in overtime to Green Bay, that fact was on full display at MetLife Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

30. Final. 44. 49. 38

Yes, the Jets lost and they likely improved draft position, so the tank fans were able to rejoice after all. However, we also saw why this team, should they handle the next 1-2 offseasons correctly, are going to be ready to finally turn the corner.

More from Empire Writes Back

Sam Darnold played his third straight solid game since returning from injury. He went 24-35 for 341 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

He posted a passer rating of 128.3. Since returning from the sidelines he has been nothing short of fantastic.

But throw out the stats and use your eyes. Simply look at the end of the game to learn all you need to know about the Jets franchise quarterback.

Late in the fourth quarter, Aaron Rodgers led his team on an 11 play, 83 yard drive that ended in a one yard touchdown run.

After a failed two-point conversion, the Packers held a 38-35 lead with less than two minutes to play.

It seemed like the game was over. Even I thought that the game was over.

It wasn’t.

Andre Roberts set the Jets up at the Green Bay 38 yard line after a 51 yard kickoff return. Six plays and 23 yards later, Jason Myers hit from 33 yards out to tie the game at 38-38 and send the game to overtime.

Unfortunately for the Jets, the Packers won the coin toss and never relinquished the football. A 16 yard touchdown pass to Davante Adams ended the Jets chances.

The point is that Darnold saw Rodgers’ last-minute drive and raised him a last minute drive. He has no fear, has a short memory and has the respect of this football team. If the Jets can put the right weapons around him we have the chance to see something very special.

Sunday afternoon also showed us why Todd Bowles needs to go. He is a defensive guru, right? The Jets defense allowed 540 yards of offense to the Packers. This just in, that’s bad. He just isn’t right to lead this team as a defensive expert any more.

They were also penalized 16 times for 172 yards, including three critical late penalties. Don’t forget the Leonard Williams punch and ejection either.

Bowles didn’t like a lot of those calls, and may hear from the league thanks to this quote (via team press release):

"I thought we were playing two teams. I thought we were playing the Packers and the stripes."

He may have been right, but it will likely still cost him a couple of shekels.

Anyway, they finish things out in New England next week, and they have something to play for.
