Trading Didi.

Should the Yankees sign Manny Machado, they would likely trade Didi Gregorius.

So, what could they get out of him?

If the Yankees traded Didi Gregorius it would likely be in an effort to get a first baseman or some pitching out of him.

With Greg Bird injured more than he’s not, and the fact that we’ve only seen a single month out of Luke Voit, the Yankees are looking for some first base help.

But who could the Yankees get?

Could they go after Brendan McKay who’s the 24th ranked prospect in the MLB with the Rays,?

Go across town for Peter Alonso who is the 58th ranked prospect with the Mets?

Or do they go for an established player in someone like Jose Martinez who will now be benched for Paul Goldschmidt in St. Louis?

Perhaps they go for pitching seeing this upcoming season will likely be CC Sabathia’s last, leaving a hole in the rotation?

Whatever it may be, the Yankees will have to throw in a bit more than a player with an expiring contract if they want to get someone who will make an impact right away.

It is clear that the Yankees want to go for the Commissioner’s Trophy now instead of building up prospects for the future.

With a lineup that includes Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Gary Sanchez, Miguel Andujar, Gleyber Torres and potentially Manny Machado, the Yankees believe they have a team that could win right now.

That, plus the fact they traded their top prospect in Justus Sheffield for James Paxton. makes it obvious they want to win now, and they’ll do whatever it takes to do just that.

This being said, if the Yankees do end up signing Manny Machado and therefore trading Didi Gregorius, you can expect it to be in an effort to bolster the lineup this season rather than a few seasons down the road.
