New York Giants: Three things we learned in loss to the Titans
Giants are horrible against NFL QBs
This narrative is not new. It might even be lazy analysis at this point but it must be addressed. Sunday marked anther game where the Giants played a team’s true starting QB and lost.
For reference, let’s make a list of the QBs the Giants went up against in their five wins.
- Chase Daniels
- Ryan Fitzpatrick/Jameis Winston
- Nick Mullens
- Colt McCoy/Josh Johnson
The exception to that rule is Deshaun Watson who the Giants were able to beat in Week 3.
However, the Texans lost to everyone their first three games and Watson was a shell of himself after an ACL tear last year
None of those names were the teams intended starting QBs. All backup QBs who the Giants were able to beat. Credit to them, they played their cards. They were supposed to beat those teams in those situations.
Now, here is the list of QBs the Giants have now lost to.
- Marcus Mariota
- Carson Wentz 2x
- Alex Smith
- Drew Brees
- Cam Newton
- Blake Bortles (somehow)
- Matt Ryan
- Dak Prescott
So, most of the time the Giants had the worst QB on the field in Eli Manning. The Giants only capitalized off of injured teams and below average QBs.
The Giants could not even par for the course when playing the best teams and QBs.
The Giants’ record should be even worse than it is.
At this point, they are lucky to have even the five wins they do.
Against the Titans, it was more or less the same. Mariota was a great game manager who was getting great play from his running backs and line.
The Giants failed to force him into making significantly mistakes and Mariota only has 88 passing yards when Eli went for over 200.
But, he knew exactly what he had to do with the Titans defense playing as well as it was.
The Giants cannot beat QBs who are starters and know their own team and are talented enough.
The Giants allowed Marcus Mariota to do his job with ease and it cost them another game and the playoffs.
Things do not get much easier as the Giants will face Andrew Luck next.
