Brooklyn Nets: The Nets are rolling behind the core of their future
The Brooklyn Nets are making their eight-game losing streak seem like forever ago after notching their fifth straight win on Sunday.
The Brooklyn Nets have done many things this season but the number one thing they have shown is just how streaky they are.
The Nets lost eight-straight basketball games before beginning their current five-game winning streak.
The Nets being streaky is fine. The East is not that impressive and even if the Nets streak their way to 41 wins, it might be enough to make the playoffs.
But, the best part of their five game winning streak, aside from it reviving their season, has been the players who helped them get there.
Since the winning streak started on December 7 with a win vs the Raptors, the Nets have been led by two important players.
D’Angelo Russell and Spencer Dinwiddie.
In the five games the Nets have won, only Russell and Dinwiddie have led the team in scoring.
Dinwiddie’s 39 against the Sixers on December 12 and Russell’s 32 on Sunday have been the at-large performances.
The interesting thing is this has all happened out of nowhere, but it is not a coincidence. The bulk of the streak has not exactly been against bad opponents either.
The Wizards, Sixers, and Raptors are all teams that are better than the Nets on paper yet fell victim to the streak.
So, the Nets are finally firing on all cylinders. They are winning home games again.
But mostly, the reason for the winning is due to things finally coming together. The Caris LeVert injury derailed things for a while, but it is all coming back.
Russell is passing the ball better leading the Nets in assists in four of the five games.
Dinwiddie is now signed on for the long term but just playing well in his natural role of the bench and is shooting well. He has led the Nets in scoring eight times this year total. But three times during the five-game streak.
This is all part of the plan, Nets fans.
The Nets are intending to build around Russell and Dinwiddie. If they are able to do so it makes life much easier for the front office.
Now, it is all coming to fruition. Russell is scoring and passing better and has been a better facilitator on offense as of late.
Then they have Dinwiddie who comes in and can get hot, make a lot of shots, and allow the Nets to ride his momentum to monster scoring runs.
Obviously, the winning streak has to come to an end eventually. However, this is not a fluke or flash in the pan.
Maybe right now it is. The Nets might be overachieving a tad right now. But, when ready, if not already ready, this is what the Nets blueprint will look like.
This is what they want Brooklyn Nets basketball to be. Russell and Dinwiddie are the guys they want to be the best.
During the losing streak, the Nets were mostly losing close games, but not getting that much scoring from Russell and Dinwiddie.
The Nets have now figured out how to win these close games and are getting the right balance.
So, look out Nets fans. They might not be able to keep winning at this pace but this recent surge is a huge glimpse into their future.
The Nets get another great test with LeBron James and the Lakers coming to town on Tuesday.
