New York Mets: Wilson Ramos signing is the perfect settlement
The New York Mets and catcher Wilson Ramos have agreed to terms and we are just waiting for everything to become official. The signing is a great settlement for the Mets.
The New York Mets more than likely have their catcher by signing Wilson Ramos to a deal. The Mets have now addressed their biggest need this offseason.
The deal is, on the surface, a great one.
The market for catchers was just not all that impressive. That is why, and this is no secret now, the Mets were trying to trade for J.T. Realmuto.
However, that has obviously fallen through. The Mets would have likely had to give up too much and he is not worth it.
So, the Mets still played the cards they were dealt. They went to their plan B, if you would, and signed Ramos.
Wilson Ramos is probably the best free agent catcher that was on the market. Yasmani Grandal was a close second but had a horrific postseason defensively.
So, the Mets obviously feel that Ramos is the better option. Of course, he probably comes cheaper.
However, this is a great settlement for Mets. The Mets did seem to want Realmuto. But, if Ramos is the consolation prize, this is a steal for the Mets.
Ramos is a former 2x Al-Star and once won the Silver Slugger in 2016. Mets fans are familiar with him from the many years he spent with the Nationals and most recently, the Phillies.
Ramos is reportedly signed on for two years. That is also wonderful to hear. He is 31 years old at a position that is not exactly easy on the body.
So, the two years fit in perfectly with his prime. After all, he just was an All-Star in 2018.
In his MLB career, he is a lifetime .273 hitter. That is a massive upgrade from the Mets’ catchers in 2018.
Last year, the Mets highest average from a catcher was Devin Mesoraco‘s .224.
So, by bringing in Ramos, it automatically upgrades the position in the lineup.
Ramos, I am assuming, will split a majority of the reps with Travis d’Arnaud, who the Mets just decided to bring back for 2019.
But, Ramos, which I am also assuming, will be the number one catcher for the next two years, or even beyond this deal.
The Mets already bolstered their bullpen this offseason by trading for Edwin Diaz and then signing Jeurys Familia.
That means the Mets’ only need was a catcher. Now, they got their guy.
Although there is a lot of unknown’s right now in how this signing will turn out, it is hard to look at this move right now as a poor one.
This is a great deal and the Mets improve, drastically behind the plate.
The Brodie Van Wagenen train is rolling. He is not wasting any time. Here is to another brilliant free agent signing.
