The New York Mets have re-signed one of their best bullpen weapons in recent memory, giving former All-Star closer Jeurys Familia a 3 year, $30 million deal.

The New York Mets have signed Jeurys Familia to a three-year deal worth $30M and it is absolutely brilliant.

Mets General Manager Brodie Van Wagenen came into this offseason with a plan, and he is clearly doing his best to execute it.

Bringing back Familia made too much sense and is the perfect scenario for both sides.

It is common knowledge at this point that the Mets needed to upgrade their bullpen, among other things.

After the trade for Edwin Diaz, however, he needed someone who could hold down the eighth inning to be able to get to Diaz.

And that is why signing Familia makes perfect sense.

Familia has closer-type stuff, as Mets fans have come to know over the last few years. However, he can be a little erratic at times, as Mets fans also know too well.

But he hasn’t always been a closer.

Once upon a time, deep in the realms of Mets despair, Familia was the setup man to Jenrry Mejia.

During the 2014 season, Familia posted 2.21 ERA in 76 games as the 8th inning guy.

In Oakland last year, he performed slightly worse, however, posting a 3.45 ERA in 30 games as the setup guy to Blake Treinen.

My point here is that Familia has experience in the 8th inning role and can be comfortable and perform well in it.

He would also complement Diaz perfectly.

They both have electric stuff, but Diaz is more consistent with not only his elite pitching but his ability to shut the door in the 9th time in, time out.

Familia is also returning to the only club he called home before getting traded to Oakland prior to last year’s trade deadline, so he already knows the in’s and out’s of this ball club and knows what the expectations of a New York team are.

Lastly, the contract he was given is fairly team friendly.

While Familia will definitely be getting his money, which he has earned, $10 million a year for an above-average relief pitcher is a pretty fair bargain.

Overall, Mets fans should be thrilled about this deal.

Van Wagenen set out to make this bullpen better, and he did just that.

While I do believe the Mets should still sign one more reliever, such as Adam Ottavino or Andrew Miller, bringing back someone like Familia is a huge step in making that happen.
