Greiss, Greiss, baby.

If the New York Islanders are so hellbent on playing multiple goalies throughout the season, as a fan and writer, I would still like to see one emerge as better than the other.

Every great NHL team needs a reliable player in what is often dubbed as the most important position.

Thomas Greiss has been far from spectacular this season. He has only in played in 19 of the 30 games because he is splitting reps with Robin Lehner.

However, number 1 has the slight edge over Lehner.

It is tough to evaluate because the Islanders offense has almost shutdown and the defense has been struggling. As a team, the Islanders are at -3 rating on the year.

But, Greiss has done his job. I’ll give him more credit than he might deserve considering his recent stretch of playing a lot.

In his 19 games he has played five more than Lehner. Yet, he has a lower GAA, save percentage, and the same amount of losses. Again, that is in five more games than his net minding counterpart.

Greiss is kind of one of those players where we know what we have. But this year, Lehner spent some time injured and Greiss played in four games from December 1-8 and that is after splitting reps up all season up to that point.

He was a playoff hero a few games back but showed he might never be that 70 game, true number one goalie, but he has done his job and what has asked of him so far.

He deserves to be the second star of the season.
