New York Mets: Mets fans, please just try being happy for once
By Sam Friedman
The New York Mets are making moves during this offseason for like the first time ever. Mets fans need to show some patience because the Winter Meetings haven’t even started yet.
New York Mets fans continue to show why they can be so insufferable.
It doesn’t matter what ownership does for the team, no matter what, the fan base could find a way to complain.
After years of the team being ridiculed the front office for not spending money, some Mets fans lash out when they trade for two very capable baseball players.
Sure, Robinson Cano is not able to rake like he used to, but he can still contribute at a very high level.
The former All-Star shoe-in, still hits at an incredibly high clip.
Here is how Cano would have ranked on the Mets if he played last season:
- Batting average – 1st
- On base percentage – 2nd
- Slugging percentage – 3rd
- OPS – 2nd
- WAR – 5th on team, 2nd among hitters
You starting to get the point?
The reason that OPS and Slugging percentage stand italicized is because Cano played at Safeco Field.
Safeco has always been characterized as one of the hardest ball parks to hit in. It’s fair to assume that Cano’s slugging percentage (.471) and OPS (.845) will remain solid, if not improve
As the for the other part of the blockbuster trade, Edwin Diaz was the best closer in the MLB last year.
He had a major league leading 57 saves. For perspective, the Mets had a total of 41 saves last year.
17 of those were from a player they traded by the name of Jeurys Familia.
Having a lights out closer, who comes in every night/day, is not as fashionable these days. But, this guy is really good.
Look for yourself:
Diaz is filthy.
After watching baseball for well over two decades, I’ve come to realize that it doesn’t matter how fast someone throws, it’s about the movement on the fastballs.
I know, a ground breaking revelation.
Diaz has a fast ball that runs away from righties, and two breaking pitches that dive off the table.
Best part about this for Mets fans, he’s 24 years old and under team control/arbitration for the next 5 seasons.
On top of these two acquisitions, Brodie Van Wagenen isn’t even done revitalizing the team.
Rumors have circled around the Mets trading for AJ Pollock or another major piece, with Noah Syndergaard on the block.
Attention to Mets faithful: Stop looking for your team to be awful, the glass is not always half empty.
Embrace that the Wilpon’s are spending money.
You shouldn’t complain about getting rid of prospects and not spending money/making moves during the offseason.
They are indirectly correlated.
