New York Jets Head Coach Todd Bowles is still employed, but is recently fired Green Bay Packers Coach Mike McCarthy an option to replace him anyway? Should the Jets even hire him?

On Sunday, the Green Bay Packers fired head coach Mike McCarthy right as the New York Jets were blowing a 16-0 lead in a loss. We will get to why that is significant later.

For the Packers, Offensive Coordinator Joe Philbin will serve as the Packers interim head coach.

The Packers are now 4-7-1 on the season and will most likely miss the playoffs for a second straight year.

It will be the first time that the Packers have missed the playoffs without an injured quarterback since Aaron Rodgers became their starting quarterback.

Packers president Mark Murphy issued a statement after McCarthy was fired, per Rob Demovsky of ESPN:

"“The 2018 season has not lived up to the expectations and standards of the Green Bay Packers. As a result, I made the difficult decision to relieve Mike McCarthy of his role as head coach, effective immediately. Mike has been a terrific head coach and leader of the Packers for 13 seasons, during which time we experienced a great deal of success on and off the field. We want to thank Mike, his wife, Jessica, and the rest of the McCarthy family for all that they have done for the Packers and the Green Bay and Wisconsin communities. We will immediately begin the process of selecting the next head coach of the Green Bay Packers.”"

Rodgers was one of the Packers players that were surprised by McCarthy’s firing. He told Kevin Patra of NFL.com:

"“I think we all share the responsibility. That’s the toughest part. Players are the ones who are playing. Obviously, coaches have a responsibility to prepare and teach and demand. But the players are on the field performing. Obviously, our performance level was such that we couldn’t keep Mike in his place.”"

That is the Packers’ side of the story. It is pretty messy, but the Jets should not care. The Jets are also a mess.

With that, McCarthy is looking for a job.

But where can he go?

Could he possibly end up with the New York Jets?

Let’s take a look at why the Jets should consider hiring McCarthy to be their head coach.
