New York Giants: Why the Giants should get rid of Odell Beckham Jr.
By Alex Jordan
It seems that Odell Beckham Jr. isn’t happy with the New York Giants. So, should he go to another team or stay with Big Blue?
After going 3-13 last year and after drafting Saquon Barkley, the New York Giants are having another horrible season with Odell Beckham Jr. at the helm.
Their loss against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday brought the Giants record to 3-8.
While people might question whether Eli Manning should play next year, people should be also be asking if the Giants should get rid of wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.?
After Sunday’s loss against the Eagles, Beckham said that he would have loved to attack the Eagles depleted secondary, but apparently it wasn’t in their game plan.
Giants coach Pat Shurmur didn’t agree with OBJ, telling Jordan Raanan of ESPN:
"“Who said that, Odell? OK. I don’t know. We ran the ball 18 times, we threw it 37. That is twice as many throws as there were runs. We had seven explosive gains in the passing game. The only team that we played that we had more was Carolina. We had eight. There were many times where we tried to throw to him. The long throw down the right sideline that we had to [tight end] Rhett [Ellison] was designed to go to Odell. They cushioned on him. We threw it to Rhett.”"
Beckham’s comments after Sunday’s game are making people question if he is happy in New York.
The wide receiver hasn’t been able to say whether he’s happy or not with the Giants.
One person who thinks the Giants should get rid of OBJ is WFAN’s Mike Francesa, who ranted about Beckham on his show on Tuesday.
"“For once, can I come out of one game one time and not have there be a Beckham story of some type we worry about and everybody in this town worrying about whether he’s happy, whether he is being utilized right, whether he is content with the game plan, whether he is on board, whether the coaches are connecting with him? I am so sick of this Beckham garbage. It is so overrated, and it is such absolute nonsense, and the media’s caught it so badly.”"
Francesa added:
"“The preoccupation with these prima donna wide receivers in this new age of passing is so overrated it is unbelievable. Enough! The best thing that could happen is they kick his rear end out of town and start over. Has it worked? He played in one playoff game, and he stunk. I am so sick of hearing about him it’s ridiculous.Everything’s a problem,. Since the Giants started kissing his rear end, they haven’t won a game! Enough already!”"
Former New York Jets coach, Rex Ryan, thinks Beckham should “jump on board” with Saquon Barkley being the face of the Giants, according to Scott Chiusano of the New York Daily News.
Before the NFL trade deadline came, the Giants had received trade offers for Odell, according to Fox Sports Jay Glazer.
Here’s what OBJ told Matt Lombardo of NJ.com about the trade rumors:
"“[My name] was tossed around in the offseason, and I’m still here. I don’t think I’m going anywhere. This is where I’m at. All I want to do is be the very best that I can be. Off the field. When I’m on the field. It’s really hard to think about that. It is what it is.”"
Anyway, is Francesa right? Should the Giants get rid of OBJ?
I think that it might be time for Odell to leave the Giants.
Yes, he signed a $90 million contract extension with the Giants, but it’s clear that he’s not happy.
Last Friday marked the four-year anniversary of OBJ’s infamous one-handed catch.
Odell doesn’t want his career to be defined by that catch, he told Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com.
"“I understand what that catch did for me and my career, but I never wanted it to define me as a player. I know – not that I feel – I know that I am much better than a one-handed catch. It’s not like that is all I am – people have tried to make me out to be a one-hit wonder by using that catch against me. That’s why part of me has always said that I wished it never happened, only because of how some people perceive that to be the only thing I’ve done in my career.I’ve always been motivated to make sure The Catch was a big part of a beginning to something and not the biggest thing I’ve ever done.”"
So far the catch is the biggest thing that he has done, if you don’t include his off the field antics, like partying on a boat in Miami with teammates before a playoff game.
Beckham has played in just one playoff game so far and lost.
Right now, the Giants are nowhere close to making to playoffs and may not be good enough to make the playoffs next year.
So Odell might want to think about leaving the Giants because he might not be as successful as he wants to be if he stays.
