New York City FC: Most Memorable Moments in David Villa’s NYCFC Career
By Sam Friedman
Villa (3) – Red Bulls (2)
Again, I completely understand that the MLS is not very popular in New York. But, you are sleeping if you don’t tune into the New York Derby.
New York City FC vs. New York Red Bulls. These fan bases do not like each other.
There are not a lot of sports teams that have deep hatred like this.
The Red Bulls, for the most part, have had New York City FC’s number. The Red Bull’s have the advantage of being around for much longer, but the teams are much more even now.
This game was incredibly important for New York City FC to win. In the dead of summer, during a playoff race, wins over the rival are huge, especially at home.
To a crowd of 33,000+, the biggest crowd in New York City FC’s history (outside of the opening match) Villa put on a performance of a lifetime.
The first two goals were spectacular.
One on one with the keeper during the first goal. Slipping past him to net an easy one.
He followed that up with an absolute screamer from just inside the box. Would’ve loved to be at this game.
Villa put on the greatest performance against NYCFC’s only true rival.
