The New York Yankees claimed Los Angeles pitcher Parker Bridwell off of waivers and designated Ronald Torreyes for assignment. The move could end up hurting Torreyes in becoming a star.

The New York Yankees claimed right-handed pitcher Parker Bridwell off of waivers from the Los Angeles Angels on Monday.

To make room on the roster, the Yankees designated infielder Ronald Torreyes for assignment.

Bridwell missed most of this year due to inflammation in his right elbow.

In one start and four relief appearances, he was 1-0 with a 17.55 ERA. With Triple-A Salt Lake, he was 1-1 with a 8.68 ERA.

Last year, Bridwell was 10-3 with a 3.64 ERA. In three seasons Bridwell has a 11-3 record with a 4.60 ERA. He join a Yankees rotation that includes Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, C.C. Sabathia, and James Paxton.

Torreyes has spent the last three years with the Yankees. However he only played in 41 games this year due to Gleyber Torres and Miguel Andujar becoming rising stars.

This year Torreyes hit .280 with seven RBIs while last year he hit .292 with three home runs and 36 RBIs.

The Yankees have said that their top priority this off-season was starting pitching, which was their weakness this year. So far that has been true as they have added Paxton and Bridwell.

While Paxton and Bridwell  are good additions to the Bronx Bombers and will provide rotation depth, the addition of Bridwell could end up hurting the Yanks.

The Bronx Bombers shortstop Didi Gregorius had Tommy John surgery last month. Gregorius is expected to be out for most of next year.

While Gregorius being out doesn’t affect Bridwell, designating Torreyes for assignment could hurt the Yankees next year.

With Gregorius out, the question is who will play shortstop until he returns?

Torreyes was an option to play short. However Torreyes probably won’t play short while Didi is out since Gleyber Torres will most likely play at short.

Another reason why adding Bridwell could hurt the Yankees is that Torreyes is a fan favorite.

Since Didi is out, fans would love to see Torreyes play at short until Didi is able to return. Torreyes would be good at playing short, just like Torres, and he could become a rising star by filling in for Didi.

Unfortunately, it seems that Torreyes will only play shortstop if Torres can’t.

Let’s hope that adding Bridwell doesn’t end up hurting the Yankees or Torreyes’ progress in becoming a major league star.
