With a new GM in the fold, New York Mets COO Jeff Wilpon says that the team will be aggressive in making improvements, but do you believe him?

We have all heard the saying “Actions speak louder than words”. It’s with that in mind that we talk about the recent comments by New York Mets COO Jeff Wilpon.

Take a deep breath, Mets fans. I know most of you cringe when you hear that name. Read along it will all be over soon.

The Mets have a new general manager in the fold, Brodie Van Wagenen. They possess the top pitcher in the National League who was just rewarded for his efforts, the great Jacob deGrom. There have been positive vibes around the team as of late.

Recently, Jeff and manager Mickey Callaway were delivering Thanksgiving dinner to a local family for part of the team’s charity work.

Take a look at what Wilpon had to say on this very topic, per Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News:

"“Aggressive, aggressive. We have to win more games,” “I tell you we have too good a pitching staff and Mickey and (pitching coach) Dave (Eiland) did an excellent job with what we had,” Wilpon continued.“We’ve got to score more runs, we’ve got to put runs on the board and let these guys go pitch and hold that lead. “And how we do that … comes from Brodie,” Wilpon continued.“He has multiple different scenarios how to get those runs and take us from what’s projected right now in the low 80’s to a 90-win team.”"

So, Mets fans, what do we think of what good old Jeff had to say? Sounds like it’s pretty good.

Do you believe him?

There are really two ways to look at this dialogue Wilpon had with the press.

We can look at it from a glass half-full point of view. He says the team is going to be aggressive. That’s great! A new general manager will have the chance to bring this team back to where we all want it to be.

After all, a fresh pair of eyes on a situation can bring a spark. It can bring a new outlook to what seems to be a bleak situation. And Van Wagenen already has a good relationship with players around the league as well as current Mets.

On the other hand, let’s consider the source, and what exactly was said.

All Mets fans have had their problems with Jeff Wilpon. We have all listened to broken promises from the man. Why should we believe him now?

Then look at what he said above. Yes, he said the Mets would be aggressive. But how? What exactly are the Mets going to do?

All Wilpon would say is that there were multiple scenarios. He wouldn’t even commit to the possibility that the payroll would increase. He just said it’s all up to Brodie.

As a Mets fan, it sounds to me like all of the same lip service we have heard in the past. Hopefully we will all get proven wrong.
