New York Giants: Giants made the right call with Saquon Barkley pick
The New York Giants still need a long-term answer at quarterback, but don’t let that stop us from realizing how great Saquon Barkley is. He is the spark plug of this team.
Yes, this New York Giants team still needs a quarterback in the very near future, but it’s time to stop saying the New York Giants made the wrong pick when they drafted Saquon Barkley.
There is no way you can blame the Giants for drafting Barkley with the number two pick in last year’s draft.
Running back was not this team’s top priority, but can you blame a team for taking the most talented player in the draft class?
With the hire of General Manager David Gettleman, it should be assumed that the team asked him who he would draft with the pick.
He looked at the team, saw the holes and still decide Barkley was the right answer for this team who was supposed to be in “win-now” mode.
So far, things have not gone according to plan.
But, it’s clear Barkley is a superstar in this league.
You might agree that this team should not have passed on a quarterback, but this is Gettleman’s team and his first act should be drafting who he has the most confidence in.
Would this team be better if it drafted Sam Darnold and had Wayne Gallman as their starting running back?
Probably not.
Darnold has played like your average rookie, some good moments and some not so good moments.
He started off super hot in week one against the Detroit Lions, but since then it hasn’t been so great.
He currently leads the league in interceptions with fourteen, but there are other factors like poor play calling and sub par play makers that could also be to blame.
Let’s not forget, behind the extremely weak Giants’ offensive line it is possible to imagine Darnold still would not fare much better than Eli Manning has this season.
If the team did not have one hundred percent confidence in Darnold, then they made the right decision in passing on him.
The Giants are coming off a big win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in which Barkley was responsible for three touchdowns, two rushing and one receiving.
Not to mention Eli Manning had one of his best performances in recent memory, proving that he may have more left in the tank than we all think.
This team, as a unit, has shown a lot more passion during games and it starts with Saquon Barkley’s ability to run the ball.
He is the spark plug on this team. Nine games in, it is finally starting to rub off.
