How does it change the offseason?

Jacob deGrom winning the Cy Young is awesome. The award is an honor and a symbol of his excellence.

No body can ever take that title away from him.

However, the show goes on. So, what does him winning the Cy Young mean for the Mets’ offseason?

On the surface, it does not mean much. For one, it is already going to be the highlight of the offseason. This is the best thing that could have happened to the Mets’ hero. Fans are proud of him and can milk this honor all the way until they can.

However, new General Manager Brodie Van Wagenen already being deGrom’s old agent complicated his contract talks.

To make things even more of a burden to what is already a difficult thing to negotiate, the Mets are no longer dealing with trying to keep their best player and just a really good pitcher.

They are no dealing with trying to extend a Cy Young winning pitcher. The dollar value in that difference might not be that high, however, the difference is massive.

There are going to be non Cy Young winning pitchers (Patrick Corbin) for example that are going to break the bank and set the market for pitchers.

That is not including the fact that deGrom is not even a free agent yet. If the Mets want to extend deGrom, they should. However, if they do it now, they are taking a chance because the value is the highest it has ever been.

Or, if they don’t that is also risky because what if he has another magical season? He showed no signs of slowing down upon the final start of 2018.

But, regardless the Mets’ offseason has now been great. They finally have a GM with a single vision and motive.

Also, Jacob deGrom won the Cy Young. That is awesome that feels great. No matter what happens this will likely be the best thing that happens to the team all offseason.

Enjoy it. Bask in it. Don’t take a second for granted.

The Mets are the only team in the NL who can have this offseason with the Cy Young winner waiting to strike again.

Next. The Jets need LeVeon Bell and should get him. dark

For someone who has watched as much Mets baseball as I have in my lifetime, even I’ll be impressed if the Mets mess this feeling of pride deGrom gave us for winning ,up.
