Predictability

More from Empire Writes Back

We talk a lot about offensive coordinators getting too “cute”. Sometimes they try to create super innovative plays when they aren’t necessary.

However, they also have to be unpredictable. They have to run when they should pass, and pass when they should run.

Too often, the Jets offense has been the predictable set of “run, run, pass, punt”. Not surprisingly the Jets are near the top of the league in three and outs.

If you don’t believe me, look at the numbers. Numbers don’t lie and they bear this out.

On first down, the Jets have run the ball 132 times versus 121 passes.

The exception is second down where there is a slight lead for passes, 102 to 92 runs.

On third down, they have passed the ball 91 times versus only 32 runs.

Use the eye test, ladies and gentlemen. Most of you can predict what the Jets offense is going to do. What do you think the defense is thinking?
