Buffalo Bills: How bad are the Bills? Matt Barkley is the chosen starter bad

The Buffalo Bills are starting Matt  Barkley on Sunday against the New York Jets in what will likely end up being the worst football game in a while. Starting Barkley just shows us how terrible the Bills are this year.

Matt Barkley is the starting quarterback of the Buffalo Bills. No matter how many times I say that it makes me sad.

I really do hate to be that guy who uses the wonderful platform to constantly complain about a football team like I use this one to complain about the Bills, but I have a question…

At what point am I supposed to look at the Buffalo Bills roster, watch the product on the field, listen to all the Sean McDermott press conferences in which he sounds deflated every time and think that this is working?

More from Empire Writes Back

At no point, this season could you look at any one of those aspects and think that things are working this year. That is why I can complain. There is nothing going well that is worth bragging about.

The Bills do have an outstanding defense, I will give them that, but if they don’t literally give up zero points, the Bills make it difficult to win.

Things were even better when rookie sensation Josh Allen was starting at QB because then the losses were at least reassuring because we never lost track of the teams plan to build around him.

But, that what makes the news of Matt Barkley all the more frustrating. The losing is just deflating with Allen out. There are no signs of where the team’s direction is going now because we know it does not include Matt Barkley.

The thing that is perhaps the worst of all is that by starting Matt Barkley, it makes me miss Derek Anderson. What kind of world do we live in that Derek Anderson’s value is about to be put on display by him not playing?

Sure, Matt Barkley has not even played yet, but why should I give him the benefit of the doubt? What has he done to prove he is not going to be like the rest of them.

His career accomplishments are as follows:

End of list. Okay, he went to USC. But, that hardly matters.

This is not even his fault. It is not his fault the only QB who is perhaps statistically worse than him in the NFL is Nathan Peterman, who is also on the Bills.

Matt Barkley is the quarterback who gives the Buffalo Bills best chance to win.

That is only a technicality because I would love to see Josh Allen on one arm, the arm he does even throw with, give it a go on Sunday.

The Bills might be okay. The Jets are also starting their backup QB. Except, the Jets’ Josh McCown is not the third backup on the team and was not picked up off the streets less than 20 days ago.

In addition to that, he is not Matt Barkley, his TD:INT ratio is not in the negatives. He does not have more interceptions than touchdowns.

So, I wrote before the Patriots game that things could not be worse for the Bills, but they decided to take that and shatter it.

This is where we are in “the process..”

Things are bad. I expect nothing and still get let down. I’m expecting the Bills to score zero points on Sunday, yet they will somehow top it.

I know what some of you might be thinking, how could I be so bashful towards the Bills? Aside from the fact that they have had maybe two good years in the last 20, it is because their best option is to start Matt Barkley at QB.

An entire offseason to prepare for this. An offseason in which they traded the only QB to get them to the playoffs this millennium, (miss you right now Tyrod) and two injuries later this is where they are at?

So, this is why I’m critical of the Buffalo Bills, they deserve it.

This is inexcusable. But, just like the next guy, I am still going to be watching the game. I still support them, I’m just disappointed in this.

But, as quickly as the Bills’ tank is rolling through Western New York and making a stop in New Jersey on Sunday, I’ll get over it.

What a wild world we live in. I swear the Bills played in a National Football League playoff games less than a year ago.

Who would have thought things would go this poorly, this quickly?

Only the Buffalo Bills.

*Please note, I would love nothing more than to be wrong about this, but come on. *
