New York Yankees: Breaking down each AL Rookie of the year candidate – Yanks have best chance to win
By Alex Jordan
Gleyber Torres
Torres had a strong start to the season, hitting .294 with 15 home runs, 42 RBIs, and a .905 OPS.
In July, he suffered a hip injury and struggled for the rest of the season. He hit .249 in the second half of the season and struggled in the playoffs.
In Game 4 of the ALDS, he grounded out in the ninth inning to end the Yankees rally and season. Overall he hit .271/.340/.480 with 24 home runs 77 RBIs, and 54 runs.
You have to wonder what Torres’s numbers would be like if he hadn’t struggled in the second half of the season and in the playoffs.
Torres might have been the favorite instead of Ohtani to win Rookie of the Year had he put numbers in the second half of the season like he did in the first half. He too, spent time injured.
The Yankees could have also gone to the American League Championship Series and possibly the World Series if Torres had played better. Torres had a good year, but it could have been better.
Regardless of what happens in the voting, Torres had an impressive rookie season that included being named to the All-Star team.
He was even named an All-Star but was injured by the time the game rolled around. Still, Torres is a great player and a staple of the Yankees’ future. It is least likely he wins ROY, but still had a great rookie season.
