New York Yankees: Breaking down each AL Rookie of the year candidate – Yanks have best chance to win
By Alex Jordan
The New York Yankees have two finalists for the AL Rookie of the Year, Gleyber Torres and Miguel Andujar.
The New York Yankees have a great chance of once again having one of their players win the AL rookie of the year award, joining Aaron Judge from last year.
There is a really good chance Gleyber Torres or Miguel Andujar wins it despite going up against the Angels’ Shohei Ohtani.
The finalists for the Baseball Writers’ Association of America awards were announced Monday night.
New York Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres and third baseman Miguel Andujar are finalist for the American League Rookie of the Year.
Los Angeles Angles pitcher Shohei Ohtani is the other finalist.
Last yea,r Yankee star Aaron Judge was the American League Rookie of the Year.
The Yankees could be the first American League team to have a player win Rookie of the Year in back-to-back seasons since Bobby Crosby and Huston Street did it with the Oakland Athletics in 2004 and 2005, according to Casey Musarra of Newsday.
Nine Yankees players have won the Rookie of the Year, including Judge, Derek Jeter (1996), and Thurman Munson (1970), according to Scott Chiusano of the New York Daily News.
Ohtani seems to be the favorite to win the AL Rookie of the Year. However, Torres and Andujar had great years as well and either one of them could win.
It would be an encouraging sign for the Yankees if their youth movement and ability to work well with their prospects gets noticed by snagging some offseason awards.
Either way, Ohtani, Andujar, and Torres are all deserving to win Rookie of the Year. Unfortunately there can only be one winner. Let’s evaluate the finalist and see who should win.
