New York Jets: Five reasons Todd Bowles needs to be fired
Penalties
Todd Bowles is not in charge of putting together his roster. That is the charge of Mike Maccagnan. The fact that he has no depth to work with is not his fault.
However, he is responsible for on-field discipline. Of course we are talking about penalties. The Jets have had a problem with penalties all year long. Current, the Jets sit tied for eighth in the league with 53 penalties.
Now, we all know that the coach isn’t on the field making the plays. He isn’t interfering with pass receivers, roughing passers, or holding players. Those are not necessarily the ones we are talking about here today.
The type of penalties we are talking about are the unforced ones. We are talking about the pre-snap penalties which have plagued the team.
Last week the Jets were guilty of seven pre-snap infractions. For the season so far, the Jets are tied for fourth in the league with 12 false start penalties.
No, with a rookie quarterback, pre-snap penalties on offense are not such a surprise. However, things should be getting better. The discipline should be getting better.
This team practices every week. These things should be happening less and less. They aren’t, and that is on the coaching staff.
