The Record

More from Empire Writes Back

For the first one we have to talk about the low-hanging fruit here. We have to talk about Bowles record.

In 2018, is Sam Darnold progressing? Sure. He is learning with every snap. But that doesn’t change the facts of life for an NFL coach.

The facts are that the NFL is a win-loss business. That is how an NFL coach is judged, and ultimately retained or fired.

It started out well with the 10-6 mark in 2015. Bowles responded with back to back 5-11 seasons and a 3-5 mark so far in 2018.

That’s a total of 23-33 over 3.5 years. No matter what type of narrative is around each season, that composite record just doesn’t cut it.

My friend Joe Caporoso from Turn on the Jets said it best in his recent article:

"Bowles has done a poor job building his coaching staff and has fostered no consistency on the offensive side of the football. He is also terrible at game management. The front office has not helped him but he has not helped himself and has given no reason for fans to believe he can coach a perennial playoff contender."

He is absolutely right. Bowles has not been given a great roster. But he has not given hope that he will get any better.
