What would happen to Gregorius?

Didi Gregorius has been the Yankees shortstop since Derek Jeter hung up his cleats back in 2014, and in the four years he’s played in pinstripes Yankees fans have come to love him.

Gregorius was a fantastic heir to Derek Jeter’s throne and the Yankees are lucky to have him.

But unfortunately, baseball is a business and sometimes even the most beloved players are put on the back burner, which could very well be the case with Didi Gregorius.

If the Yankees did sign Machado this would immediately make him the everyday shortstop, taking over Didi Gregorius’ role.

Now before you say “well Machado used to play third, he can do it again”, stop that is not the case and that would pose even more problems.

Manny Machado has said on multiple occasions that he will be signing with a team where he will play shortstop, not third base.

This being said, if the Yankees want Machado to play in the Bronx then he will do so at shortstop, not third base.

Also, the Yankees also have the likely 2018 AL Rookie of the Year, Miguel Andujar at third base.

Therefore, if Manny Machado does play for the Yankees he will be a shortstop not a third base.

So, what happens to Didi Gregorius?

If Manny Machado is brought to town than Didi Gregorius won’t be needed.

He is too talented of a player to sit on the bench, and not good enough to be the designated hitter on a talented Yankees team.

So with that, Didi Gregorius would likely be traded as he is too valuable to simply sit on the bench.

Unfortunately for the Yankees, he is up for arbitration going into 2019 and is a free agent going into 2020 so they wouldn’t be able to get too much out of him.

But, the Yankees would be able to find a suitor for him as he is a great player who has a lot to offer.

A team like maybe the Athletics who are a player or two away from being a contender as they made the Wild Card game in 2018 but fell short to the Yankees.

Nonetheless, if the Yankees do end up signing Manny Machado you can expect something to be done with their current shortstop, Didi Gregorius.
