After eight games of the season for the New York Jets, we take a look at Sam   Darnold in the eyes of the fans with their first half grades.

The New York Jets are halfway into their season with a 3-5 record. They are also halfway into the first season with Sam Darnold as the starter.

There certainly have been highs and lows. Darnold has made some great throws and some not so great throws. The Jets have been better than expected in some games. In others, the offense has been invisible.

Let’s take a look at Darnold’s stats so far:

  • 138-250, 55.2% completion percentage, 1,705 yards, 11 touchdowns, 10 interceptions, 74.5 rating

Halfway through the season we have seen about what we should be seeing. Darnold is learning by playing. He was going to make mistakes, and he has. Among other ways, he has thrown ten interceptions. He will get better, but it takes time.

So how has he done so far? How would you grade Darnold thus far?

We could go through our opinions. I could go through a breakdown of all of the elements of his game to date, all of his good/bad throws, and more.

Instead, I wanted to hear what Jets fans think. That’s right, you guys.

We decided to take this topic to Facebook. We posted a discussion thread, asking fans to grade Darnold on his first half.

The answers received on the thread were varied and wide-ranging.

One thing they all had in common was that they were all interesting.

Who said Jets fans don’t have their own opinions?

Let’s look at some of those answers:

In a follow-up we asked this fan if Darnold has met his expectations, fallen short or exceeded:

So it may be a mediocre grade, but the reasons aren’t really Darnold’s fault. This fan is happy with his progress and work so far.

Next we have fans that are able to put aside the team deficiencies and place the grade accordingly:

There is no wrong answer. The grade can go either way in this respect.

There have been some problems and they haven’t all been Sam Darnold’s fault. He didn’t pick the roster he plays on. It’s not his fault that the depth behind Quincy Enunwa and Robby Anderson is not good.

Like it or not, however, these problems have made it tougher on Darnold. That can be reflected in the grade or be ignored. Each way is fair.

dark. Next. Three reasons for loss to Bears

The other end was the fans that felt uncomfortable giving him a grade at all at this point:

It’s like when you haven’t turned in all of your work in school and the teacher gives an incomplete. It’s not an unfair way to think. It has been only eight games and the team has its problems around Darnold.

Me, I place him at around a B. For what he has had to work with Darnold has performed well. He is learning from his mistakes and not making the same ones twice. That is all we can ask for.

Thanks to the fans for participating.
