The New York Giants are looking at possibly benching Eli Manning. While Kyle Lauletta would be the starter if Eli was benched, Lauletta’s arrest opens the door for Alex Tanney to possibly start.

The New York Giants offense has been horrible, however, the worst drive the Giants have had this season wasn’t led by Eli Manning but by rookie quarterback Kyle Lauletta who was arrested on Tuesday for a traffic offense.

According to Ron Zeitlinger of NJ.com, Lauletta was driving to the Giants practice facility and tried to make a right turn from the wrong lane to get onto Route 495 West and was directed to go straight.

Instead of going straight, he made the right turn and almost ran over the cop who was directing traffic. Another officer stopped him at the end of the on-ramp.

Police sources told Mike Garafolo of NFL Network that Lauletta hit the gas, ignored cops order to stop, almost hit the cop and another car, cut off other cars, and refused to put his window down and step out of the car.

He has been charged with eluding police, obstructing administration of law, resisting arrest, reckless driving, disregarding an officer’s directions, improper turn in a marked traffic lane and failure to remain in a marked lane, according to Jordan Raanan of ESPN.

Giants  coach Pat Shurmur issued a statement on Lauletta’s arrest, per Paul Schwartz and Lia Eustachewich of the New York Post:

"“We were made aware of the situation this morning, and we have been in contact with Kyle. We are still in the process of gathering information. This is obviously very disappointing.”"

Lauletta’s arrest isn’t the ideal news for the Giants as they are questions about whether Eli Manning will start the next game or not.

Shurmur told ESPN’s Jordan Raanan :”We’ll see but I think that Eli is our quarterback,” when asked about Eli starting the Giants next game.

If the Giants decided to bench Eli, then Lauletta would have likely been the guy to get the start. The Giants should bench Eli so they could have seen how good Lauletta is.

However, with Lauletta getting arrested, the Giants might not get the chance to see how good Lauletta is.

If that’s the case, then they should still bench Eli and have Alex Tanney start.

Tanney hasn’t played in a game with the Giants so they could see how good he is if they start him.

While he may or may not be the future quarterback of the Giants, Tanney deserves to get a shot to show what he’s got if Lauletta doesn’t get a shot, because the Giants need to replace a declining Eli Manning.

I still think that Lauletta should get a chance to play despite the arrest.

However, if he doesn’t then the Giants should start Alex Tanney for the rest of the season.
