Darron Lee spent two years at Ohio State before the Jets made him a first round selection in 2016.
His first two years have been quite underwhelming. Most Jets fans didn’t believe he was worthy of being a first rounder after those two seasons.
According to Pro Football Focus (subscription required), Lee’s overall grade as a rookie was 45.4 and was 44.2 in his second season.
In 2016 Lee allowed a passer rating of 130.8. In 2017 that rating “dropped” to 111.4.
This year he hasn’t been perfect, but Lee has been far better.
So far in the current campaign, Lee has posted an overall grade of 77.4. He has picked off the first three passes of his career and quarterbacks only have a rating of 72.4.
It seems that Darron Lee is finally starting to understand the system. In the third season of a player’s career, they often take that next step. Lee is starting to do so and at the right time. This upcoming off-season is the time when the Jets have to decide whether or not to take his fifth year option.
Next. Matthews should provide relief. dark
Why are we talking about Lee this particular week? Well, Trey Burton is waiting in Chicago. He is coming off his best game of the year, with 126 yards and one touchdown on nine catches.
The Jets are going to have to be ready to stop this guy, as he is becoming one of Mitch Trubisky‘s favorite targets. The tight end often is the coverage responsibility of a linebacker and one of them would be Lee.
Lee and company are going to have to play big. Let’s see if they can.
