Brodie Van Wagenen

More from Empire Writes Back

Brodie Van Wagenen is an interesting candidate because he has never been an executive.

He is an agent as the co-head of the CAA Sports Baseball division. Essentially, Van Wagenen has been the opposite of a general manager.

He represents significant players, such as Jacob deGrom and Yoenis Cespedes. I think we are familiar with those two guys.

Van Wagenen also negotiated the multi-million dollar contracted signed by Robinson Cano with the Seattle Mariners.

One would have to wonder if he would leave the millions upon millions of dollars from being an agent on the table to become a general manager.

To his credit he is considering the opportunity and didn’t want to talk in detail about the situation due to his current position. He did release the this statement, (per Dicomo):

"“I believe baseball is better when the Mets are competitive and successful,” Van Wagenen said in a statement. “As Jeff and Fred continue their search for a new head of baseball operations, the players, fans and entire organization will be motivated to have a leader with the skills and commitment to win. If the Wilpons believe I am that person, we will have that conversation.”"

If Van Wagenen were to be the choice it could be a good move, and Dave Stewart left being an agent to become a baseball operations executive.

Bringing in an agent would give you a general manager that has an extra special understanding of the process. He has been on the opposite side of the table and he could use that to help negotiations going forward.

This choice might raise some eyebrows but it could very well work out.
