Not even a full 24 hours after another brutal loss in Atlanta, the New York Giants begin their purge by trading Eli Apple to the New Orleans Saints. The Giants are a hot mess.

The New York Giants have traded Eli Apple to the New Orleans Saints. This is the first step of what we already knew, the Giants need to enter a rebuilding phase.

The Giants are a hot mess on and off the field. We are witnessing them crumble and shoot themselves in the foot.

The worst part about giving up on Eli Apple is not that it is the wrong decision. It is not that it’s an ill-timed trade.

More from Empire Writes Back

The worst part of this all is that Eli Apple is not the first former first round pick the Giants have given up on this year.

Ereck Flowers is now in Jacksonville and Apple is now in NOLA.

The Jerry Reese era, particularly his swing and misses on draft picks, is starting to derail the Giants.

When Dave Gettleman came in, it was easy to question why he didn’t make more changes or why he failed to improve the roster.

Now, it is becoming apparent why. He is now clearly going to part ways with whoever he has to and clean house.

Eli Apple should have been gone last season and the Giants are lucky they were able to get something for him.

However, the Giants now have glaring holes in their roster when a guy like Apple and Flowers were supposed to be the saviors.

It is no accident at all that the Giants are 1-6 and look like they couldn’t beat any other NFL team right now.

The Giants’ best bet from this point going forward is to keep selling off talent, acquire draft capital, and get out of the pits of misery.

Eli Apple is one player they traded.

But, he might not have even been the “Eli” that was the biggest liability to this team. Eli Manning will always be a legend, but is not there anymore.

Regardless, it is hard to look at a team that is 1-6 and think things were going well. It is hard to find silver linings.

But, there is a good chance the Giants are the worst team in the NFL and in the New York market, that is the last thing the fans expect to be.

Eli Apple, in particular, is not the first or the last player who will be gone from this team. He also shouldn’t be the SECOND former first round draft pick gone in a matter of a few days, but is.

The Giants are a train wreck now. They said they wanted to contend this year, but failed miserably.

Now, they already backed out of that plan to start a new one.

Their best bet is to hope they don’t win anymore games. Get the best pick, get some other team’s picks, and blow this train up.

You can watch the product and think to yourself that the Giants are a hot-mess. You can read the tabloids and think to yourself there is dysfunction.

Trading Eli Apple right after a season ending loss confirms both of those things.

It is now the rebuilding era. The Gettleman era. I’d expect  lot more losing.
