The Jets were actually out-gained in this one, 428 yards to 374. The cornerback situation didn’t help, but this defense definitely bent.
However, they didn’t break often enough to change the outcome of this game. How did they pull that off?
The Jets defense was opportunistic. They turned the Colts over when they had the opportunities.
Overall New York won the turnover battle 4-2 and it started right away on the first drive.
An Andrew Luck pass was deflected and it wound up in the hands of Morris Claiborne who took it to the house for six points.
The defense gave the offense short fields. After the interception that went back for six, they picked Luck off two more times. Each time, the Jets started deep in Colts territory after the turnover.
Even with a rookie at the helm, that scenario makes winning a whole lot easier.
This is the type of defense that Todd Bowles and the rest of us want to see.
Making a rookie go the length of the field all the time is not a recipe for success. Giving the offense short fields is a recipe for success.
