In our weekly New York Jets preview we take a look at a man with a tough task this week. The spotlight is on right tackle Brandon Shell.
The New York Jets have an important home game coming up on Sunday as they take on the Denver Broncos. It is about as must win as you can get this early in the season.
After a three-game losing streak, a 1-3 record is what the Jets bring home, looking to turn things around. That task will not be easy.
Each week, we spotlight one member of the Jets, be it a coach or a player, that will serve as an important piece in the upcoming game.
This week, the spotlight is on right tackle Brandon Shell.

From birth through college, Shell was in South Carolina. He attended the University of South Carolina and started at both right and left tackle.
Back in 2012, Shell started 10 of 13 games and was a first team freshman All-American. He was slated as a third day pick and that is where the Jets selected him.
The Jets chose Shell in the fifth round of the 2016 draft. He became a full-time starter in 2017 and hasn’t looked back.
Pro Football Focus (subscription required) graded Shell at 64.7 overall in 2017. He’s at a 64.0 so far in 2018.
And his genetic ties give him a great chance to be a top offensive lineman in this league.
His great uncle is the great Art Shell.
Who is that? Young fans, he was selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame after playing for the Oakland Raiders from 1968-1982. He also served as the head coach on two separate occasions.

Why is he going to be so important on Sunday? Von Miller, that’s why.
Yes, they move Miller around the formation but his position is on the defense’s left side. That puts him in a direct battle with Brandon Shell.
Last season, when the Broncos faced the Jets, Shell allowed a sack to Von Miller. He allowed two hurries and two pressures as well. Not a good result for the Jets.
Jeremy Bates would be well-served to keep someone to chip at Miller and give Shell a bit of help. One on one, Shell’s chances aren’t great. Shell is a decent starting tackle, but Miller is an all-world talent.
Shell must have a big game, and the game plan better give him help. Otherwise it will be another long afternoon for the boys in green and white.
Hopefully Jeremy Bates will learn from the mistakes of the last couple of weeks and actually make adjustments.
