New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone has decided that Luis Severino will start the AL Wild card game. The Yankees could end up regretting that decision.

On Wednesday, the New York Yankees will face the Oakland Athletics in the American League Wild Card game.

There has been a lot of debate as to who should start that game for the Yankees, but it was announced on Tuesday that Luis Severino will start. Liam Hendriks will start for the Athletics.

Severino was named the starter over J.A. Happ and Masahiro Tanaka.

More from New York Yankees

Happ was the favorite to start the Wild Card game as he is 7-0 with a 2.69 ERA with the Yankees and he also beat the Athletics last month.

Happ and Tanaka will be on the roster for Wednesday’s game in case things go bad for the Yankees, according to Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News.

Here’s what manager Aaron Boone told Coley Harvery of ESPN about Severino starting the Wild Card game:

"“After some bumps in the road, certainly in the second half of the season, he’s turned a corner and really started to throw the ball better. He’s ready for this. But I guess in a way I’m going with what I believe is Sevy [Luis Severino] turning the corner, and what I believe is when he’s pitching his best, he’ll be the best pitcher on the field. I feel like he’s ready for this opportunity, and he’s very much looking forward to taking the ball.”"

Aaron Judge thinks that Sevy should be the starter because he is their ace.

However, the Yankees could regret having Sevy start the Wild Card game. Before the All-Star game, I would have said that Severino should start the Wild Card game for the Yankees, but now he might not be the right starter for the game.

In the first half of the season, Sevy was the Yanks best pitcher as he went 14-2 with a 2.12 ERA in his first 19 starts.

Once the second half began, Sevy was not the same ace pitcher as before. He was 5-6 with a 5.69 ERA in his final 13 starts. He turned things around at the end of the season though, going 2-1 in his final three starts with a 2.04 ERA.

Severino ends the regular season with a 19-8 record, a 3.39 ERA and 220 strikeouts. At Yankee Stadium, where the Wild Card game will be played, he won 10 games, lost two and had a 2.74 ERA.

Another reason why Severino might not be the right guy to start the Wild Card game, besides his second half performance, is his performance against the Athletics this year.

He was 1-1 with a 6.23 ERA. In his last game against the Athletics Severino lasted only two and two-thirds innings and gave up five earned runs.

If you want another reason why Sevy might not be the right guy, then look at last year’s Wild Card game. Severino started last year’s game and got pulled in the first inning after recording just one out and allowing four hits and three runs.

Now, Severino might go out and perform like he did in the first half of the season or in his final three starts in the Wild Card game.

But, if the Yankees lose the game, and their season abruptly ends, then they will regret having Severino start the game.

Next. Boone needs to keep the lineup simple. dark

This all rides on Sevy and Boone’s decision to give him the start in the most important game of the year to date.
