The season is a long one

The New York Mets learned the hard way, once again, that the MLB season is a grind. It is long and every single inning of every single game ends up meaning something.

Just look at the playoffs for this year as an example. There were two extra games just to decide the division champions this year.

If you look at anyone of those teams’ games from the first to last, every strike call, ball call, ball that just went foul, whatever, it could have saved them from needing an extra game.

More from New York Mets

That is the extreme example to how that point symbolizes the Mets in 2018.

The Mets were great in April. They were even 10 games over .500 at one point, then things unraveled in June and July. Things picked back up later in the year. The Mets were even the best team in their division after the All-Star break.

But, the season is also before the all-star break. This is not trying to say that the Mets were a great team because they ended well, it is just saying that if they played all 162 games to the level they showed they once could, this would be a playoff preview instead.

But, that is not the case. The Mets had a long season. Mickey Callaway, the rookie manager, had some hiccups.

The offense slowed down and couldn’t hit at times. Syndergaard got a random disease mostly affiliated with children.

Thins go awry and quickly. Just as quickly as things go awry, they can come back to go smoothly.

That was the Mets this year. A lot of things happened in and out their control. But they failed to win games through it all.

The 2018 Mets are the victims of some excellent parts of the season and some awful ones. It is a long season.

They failed to adapt to the grind.

Hopefully, it ended up being a learning one for them. Hopefully, they understand for the future how important every month, week, and game is.

A takeaway from the Mets’ 2018 season is how high they started and finished to how low they were during everything in between.
