New York Mets captain David Wright will play the final game of his career on Saturday. He will go out as a New York legend, like some famous New York Yankees players.

Saturday will be an emotional day for the New York Mets and their fans as David Wright plays the final game of his career.

On Tuesday, the Mets took Wright off of the disabled list and put him on the active roster.

Wright will retire as one of the best Mets players of all-time. He’s hit .296 with 242 home runs and 970 RBIs in his career (barring what he does his last few at bats).

The Mets’ captain is a seven-time All-Star and ranks in the top 10 in all 16 offensive categories. He holds a Mets record with 1,777 hits.

When asked about what he think his legacy will be, Wright told Steve Serby of the New York Post:

"“I’d like to think that I tried to do things the right way, and that I tried to treat people with respect, I tried to be a good teammate, I tried to be a good leader and a good representation for the New York Mets. I will say that if I continue to succeed in those categories, the numbers in baseball speak for themselves good and bad, and I can probably tell you some things that I’m proud about and some things that I’m not so proud about as far as on the baseball field”"

Wright definitely did things the right way (pun intended).

He never did steroids or took performance enhancing drugs and was a good leader and player. He was a class act all the way and represent the Met and New York well.

Wright was such a class act that the New York Yankees took out a full-page ad in Friday’s New York Post to congratulate him on his retirement.

Speaking of the Yankees, Wright is similar to a couple of New York Yankees legends.

Mets announcer Ron Darling compared Wright to Yankee legend Don Mattingly. Darling told Matt Ehalt of NorthJesrsey.com:

"“I think of David – Don (Mattingly) probably did more as far as batting titles and MVPs and all that — it’s a Mattingly kind of suspended career. Great career, classy individual, played both sides of the ball, but the interruption of the career with the injuries stopped us from taking a look and saying in five years, ‘Woah, he belongs.’”"

Another Yankees legend that Wright is similar to is Derek Jeter.

Wright is the Mets’ version of the former Yankee captain. Jeter was a class act and had a great career. Jeter was the face of the Yankees, just like Wright was the face of the Mets, and represent his team and New York the way it should be represented.

Jeter had his number retired by the Yankees. While we don’t know if the Mets will retire Wright’s number or not, it will be well deserved if they do.

One thing we know for sure is that both Jeter and Wright are future Hall of Famers.
