After just three games, some New York Jets fans are calling Sam  Darnold a bust. That couldn’t be more ridiculous and silly.

New York Jets fans, at least some of them, are really amazing. They have hit top form once again with our new quarterback, Sam Darnold.

After one game, he was a world beater. Darnold was the greatest thing the Jets have seen since Joe Namath. The Jets were going to the playoffs right now and all was right with the world.

Now, the Jets sit 1-2 after a loss to the Cleveland Browns. Darnold admittedly didn’t look as good as he has in previous weeks, and the tide has turned.

Fans seem to be off of the Darnold train already. Can you believe that? Here are just two of the takes that I encountered:

More from Empire Writes Back

I thought we were finished with this Bridgewater issue but apparently we are not. Therefore, time to address this one first.

For the 38,000,000 time, Teddy Bridgewater was never going to be the quarterback of the Jets. Period.

You don’t put a 25-year-old in the lineup and make an investment when you have invested in a 21-year-old at the top of the draft.

The Jets only guaranteed $1 million to Bridgewater for a reason. He never was destined to start in New York.

Can we move on from this narrative, please! THANK YOU!

Now let’s move onto this Darnold being a bust thing. This is a new level of silly even for Jets fans.

He’s 21 years old and it’s the third start of his career. The third, that’s it.

dark. Next. Statistical takeaways from the Cleveland game

To anyone calling him a bust, take a look at something:

  • 20-44, 193 yards, zero touchdowns, two interceptions

That is not Sam Darnold’s line. Ladies and gentlemen, that is the line from the third start of some guy named Peyton Manning.

Imagine someone calling him a bust, huh?

How about this one?

  • 18-33, 193 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions

Those stats belong to John Elway from his third game. Bust? I think not.

And let’s go back into history and see this abbreviated third start:

  • 1-6, 19 yards, no touchdowns

Fran Tarkenton put in this masterful performance. What do we think of him?

In his third start, Troy Aikman put in these “outstanding” numbers:

  • 6-21, 83 yards, zero touchdowns, two interceptions

He was benched during the game the following week. The Hall of Fame would disagree if you called Aikman a bust.

So let’s drop the hysterics regarding Sam Darnold. He has played three games and he is 21 years old. It’s enough already. Stop it, Jets fans. We finally have a quarterback, let’s give him a chance to grow without us breathing down his neck with every incomplete pass.
