Walk off Yankee Stadium

Derek Jeter‘s career can be defined as making the improbable common.

Every chance Derek Jeter ever had to make history, you just knew he was going to do it in the most dramatic or least likely way possible.

Well, in 2014, in his last career game in Yankee stadium as a player, he did that once again.

At that point, “Jeets” had not been the same as he once was for years. He was not playing his best and the Yankees were in a bizarre funk and in a rare multiple year playoff drought.

However, on that fateful September night in 2014, you just knew that Jeter had one last magical moment left in him.

Although it was not technically the last game of his career, it was the last game he played at shortstop, and the last one fans want to remember.

Naturally, but mostly unsurprisingly, Jeter hit a walk off single and the Yankees won the game. A clutch base hit by Jeter won the Yankees a game. Sounds familiar.

It was the last hurrah for an iconic player. He walked off his last ever game at the Stadium that he practically built, the New Yankees stadium.

Jeter’s career would not have been justified if it ended with a broken ankle in the 2012 ALCS or after a lackluster random season. It was only appropriate that it was announced way ahead of time, and that it ended on a clutch moment no one could ever forget.

He was on the top for so long, had a natural decline, and ended the only way he knew how. It was the best last hurrah in New York sports history and why it has to end this list.

Tiger Woods is a legend whose career is seeing a resurgence. No matter what happens, he will be remembered for at least making back to the top after seeing the bottom.

Like every athlete on this list, the last thing they will be remembered for was getting back to an elite form.

A last hurrah is not always the last game, match, tournament, or seaon season. The criterion is different for everyone.

However, the “last hurrah” for this list means brining one last great thing or moment to the fan base as their career winded down.

Tiger Woods did that for golf and these players did it for New York.

All these moments or accomplishments count as “last hurrah’s.”
