New York Yankees: Neil Walker’s magical homer is the most Yankees things ever
The New York Yankees won the first game against the Red Sox during this series and they really had no business doing so. Neil Walker’s magical home run is the most Yankees thing ever.
With the New York Yankees the last 50 games or so, when it rains, it pours. Even Murphy’s Law applies to them this year, what could have gone wrong did.
Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez, Gleyber Torres, Aroldis Chapman, and Didi Gregorius are key parts to the Yankees team and they have all missed significant time with an injury at some point this year.
The Yankees do find themselves in the playoffs, but it is still not pretty. They are struggling to stay afloat and have nothing to thank but a massive gap they had built up from earlier this year.
But, at the end of the day, the Yankees found their magic to beat the Red Sox once again.
In what might have been against one of the best teams ever, the Yankees even taking Tuesday nights game is worth gloating about. Maybe even put the box score in monument park.
In a game where Aaron Judge returned. On a night that saw the Yankees scathe off AL East Elimination for one more the night. The magic came from the unlikeliest of heroes.
No, it wasn’t the returning the Judge. It was not even the one of the NL MVPs they have in their outfield.
It was Neil Walker. The little engine who could, a career-long slightly above average at best infielder who created one of the best moments of the Yankees’ season. A season where they can still win 100 games.
The fact that J.A. Happ was once again dealing vs the Red Sox is interesting enough. That is basically why the Yanks got him.
But, no, on a night where multiple errors in the ninth tried to hand the game back to the Red Sox the hero, the moment, the reason for hope, was because of the swing of Neil Walker.
Honestly, that is the most Yankees thing ever. No team has any many winning moments as the Yankees. No team has made their brand so iconic.
But, it is still the Neil Walker’s who make this season so special.
The Yankees’ best player in 2018 is not Judge. He is the guy but has been hurt. The best hitter has been Miguel Andujar. Arguably, their best pitcher has not been the “ace” Luis Severino, it has been Masahiro Tanaka.
But, the best part is, their manager, Aaron Boone, who is starting to melt down, is famous for his magical home run in the 2003 ALCS. We all know this.
So, it is only fair that Neil Walker, also an unlikely name and hero, is the guy who has been creating some of the best moments for the Yankees this year.
The Yankees do not need to win this series vs Boston. They do not even need to play all that well down the stretch to make the playoffs, their gap is still that comfortable.
But, what Neil Walker’s go ahead, essentially game-winning, two-run homer did was show that Yankees still have the magic they have for over 100 years.
More importantly, it showed that in the unlikeliest of nights, with one random swing, it change everything.
The Yankees proved that they can still win a game vs a good team on any given night. The Red Sox are technically still playing for something too.
They also showed that no matter how bad their lineup is playing, how poor the defense is, that this is a team that can do anything with one swing of the bat.
The pitching was great. The magic was there. The team got the win.
All those above things are what wins in the playoffs. The Yankees are still capable of doing that with the best of them.
So, it might have only been one home run, for only his 10th of the season, but it was symbolic.
Neil Walker is not the hero that this team expected, he is not even the hero that this team needs, but with these new Yankees, he is the hero they should want.
Crazy time of the year in the Bronx.
