Buffalo Bills: Simply enjoy Josh Allen’s first start, it’s historic regardless
The Buffalo Bills are coming off a loss where things could not have gotten much worse, but seeing that Josh Allen played well in the middle of it, helps make his fist start vs the Chargers exciting. Time to just enjoy it for what it is.
The Buffalo Bills are coming off a loss so bad it already has people thinking they will pick first in next year’s draft, but they did get to see Josh Allen play. They do deserve that, but they still have a chance for something good to come out of their Week 2 match vs the Chargers.
The Bills announced, in what was really the first chance that they had, that Josh Allen will get the start vs the Chargers in the team’s home opener.
Allen played well in small doses this preseason. He also led the Bills to their only points in absolute garbage time vs the Ravens last Week.

Now, he has earned his first start career NFL start this Sunday. Nathan Peterman might have looked awful, but Allen still played his way to the start.
He simply showed that it is time for him to learn the ropes, get his feet wet, and help the team come close to winning.
But, the fact that Allen is simply starting makes this game worth watching and really important.
If Allen looks awful, we all be quick to call him a bust. If Allen looks like Joe Montana, we all be quick to praise him as the next such.
So, it is important that to simply enjoy his start for what it is. Nothing is built overnight and the Bills have such a weak team around him that it is going to take so much time.
I’m not saying another 0.0 passer rating from a Bills starting QB is fine and dandy. So, Allen will need to play better than Peterman did. However, I will say that him starting is ushering in a new era and that is better than where the Bills were before.
Peterman was never dubbed as the next guy. He was always simply brought in to be better than the other quarterbacks on the team. There was never real hype around him.
Now, there is actual hype around Josh Allen. He is the highest Buffalo Bills quarterback ever selected in the Draft. The Bills gave up actual draft capital to get him. He was chosen over others.
This regime thinks Allen can be an elite NFL QB. Some experts think he has the highest upside in this draft class.
Either way, he has always been hyped up and been respected as one of the top QBs out of college. Not many Bills fans felt this hyped about EJ Manuel, who the Bills traded BACK in the draft to get.
It took many Bills fans a year or two to like Tyrod Taylor, and many still don’t like him.
But, Allen’s arrival goes even well before that. The last QB who was drafted in the first round that was not a total bust was Jim Kelly. He is still the face of this franchise and hasn’t played in over 20 years.
The Bills have not a QB to be excited about. Even going back to JP Losman, there was nothing about him that struck any hype.
The Bills have had many QBs since then. That list would take like 30 more articles to talk about.
So, no matter what happens, and we see the team Allen has around him, just enjoy his start and watch it and remember it.
There has not been a guy the Bills were this high on in a long time. He gives the Bills the best chance to win and is someone with a lot of upsides.
The Bills do not need to beat the Chargers for his debut to be successful. They do not need to lose to the Chargers for it to be a failure.
The fact that he is simply out there is exciting. Let him learn the way and let him show off what he can do.
It might not be hard to better than Nathan Peterman, but it is also not easy to live up to a top 10 draft pick.
Allen is in a situation where he needs to do both, but more importantly, he is in a situation where he needs to just play and begin the new era of Buffalo Bills football.
Allen is not in Buffalo to end the playoff drought, that has already happened. Allen is not in Buffalo so the Bills can get a new QB in a year, this was the year to get one.
Josh Allen is a Bill to be the QB of the future and be the key behind what they are trying to build. So, let’s just try to enjoy his start, resent it. This will be his first of many as the Bills QB.
It is a day in Bills history that will be remembered forever. Whether it is remembered positively or negatively, it is historic and something no fan should want to miss.
