New York Mets: Projecting the Mets positional lineup for 2019
By Nico Doria
With the 2018 season looking to be a wash for the New York Mets, lets take a look at what the Mets lineup will look like on Opening Day 2019.
The Mets will go into every season (being that they still have their big pitchers) with a shot. Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, and Zack Wheeler have just been too good this year and are too talented for them not to have a shot.
The Mets offense just can’t seem to score runs for them.
Hopefully, a full season of Jeff McNeil and a season healthy for most returning players will provide a spark to maybe make another run just like 2015.
The Mets cannot typically rely on free agency to get better because that usually does not work out for them. Luckily for them, the Mets are beginning to show us something with the pieces they have.
Let’s stat with a position that has been very odd or lackluster for the Mets ever since Mike Piazza.
Catcher: Travis d’Arnaud
Coming off of a season where he tore his UCL and had Tommy John surgery, Travis d’Arnaud will look to take back his starting position.
In 2017 he batted .244, had an OPS of .735 with 16 home runs and 57 RBIs.
He appeared in 112 games for the Mets and seemed to have taken over mostly as the starter for the Mets.
d’Arnaud probably won’t live up to his top prospect level hype that was when the Mets got him from the Blue Jays.
But, he is a very serviceable starting catcher in the majors where some can’t even hit at all. As long as he can throw out a couple more runners, he should be a solid option behind the plate.
