Time to continue our weekly spotlight on an important New York Jets player in each game. This week we are looking at Trumaine  Johnson.

Week number two is rapidly approaching. The New York Jets open their home season against Ryan Tannehill and the Miami Dolphins. After that week one drubbing of the Lions, MetLife Stadium will be jumping on Sunday afternoon.

Now is the time for our weekly preview. We are taking a look at one player on the team that should play a significant role in the game plan for the upcoming game.

Last week the profile was on Nathan Shepherd, this week, we look at another new team member, Trumaine Johnson.

Johnson was drafted by the Rams in the third round of the 2012 draft, and right away showed he was worth the choice.

More from Empire Writes Back

In his first action in September of 2012, Johnson recorded his first interception of his career and the first of two in 2012.

Over the next two seasons, Johnson recorded three interceptions each year.

On November 30, 2014, he recorded his first pick six on a 43 yard interception return during a 52-0 win over the Oakland Raiders.

Johnson’s breakout year came in 2015 when he posted seven interceptions. He also recorded 17 pass defenses and 71 tackles.

After two more years with the Rams, Johnson signed with the Jets on a five-year, $72.5 million contract during this past off-season.

He has already posted an interception, picking off a Matthew Stafford pass last week in the 48-17 win.

Clearly he is the best cornerback the team has boasted since Darrelle Revis. OK, Darrelle Revis in his prime.

Next. Breaking down Darnold in week one. dark

Look for Johnson to spend a lot of time on the Dolphins top receiver, and that means Kenny Stills. Jarvis Landry is gone so all eyes will be on Stills. He’s a burner and can wreck a game with a bomb.

According to Pro Football Focus (subscription required), Johnson was targeted seven times last week, allowed three receptions for 53 yards but recorded the one interception.

He allowed a catch percentage of under 50% (42.9%). Not a bad day of work for the Jets new lead cornerback.

Pro Football Focus gives the slight advantage to Johnson over Stills, at least from a fantasy football perspective, but that can give us some insight as to how they have fared against each other.

Trumaine will play an essential role in the Jets winning on Sunday.
