The last New York Mets pitcher to win the Cy Young award, R.A.  Dickey, is rooting for Jacob  deGrom to win the Cy Young award this year.

It’s no secret that the New York Mets are having a horrible season and Jacob deGrom has been the only highlight for them this season. He’s in contention to win the National League Cy Young award.

Former Mets pitcher R.A. Dickey, who was the last Mets pitcher to win the Cy Young award in 2012, thinks that deGrom should win the Cy Young award. He told Mike Puma of the New York Post:

"“I can’t be objective. I want him to win it and I want it for the Mets. I want it for the fan base. I want it for him. He’s been consistently good for a long time. I am pulling for him, there is no question.”"

I agree with Dickey in that deGrom should win the Cy Young because he has been really good all season.

deGrom winning the Cy Young would be the best thing to happen to the Mets this season and it would give a disappointed Mets fan base something to cheer about.

deGrom should win the Cy Young because he has been dominating all season and has been the Mets best pitcher this season.

He is one of the National League’s best pitchers this season and has made history. On Tuesday, the” deGrominator” allowed two runs in seven innings in the Mets loss to the Miami Marlins and broke a 108-year old MLB record.

Tuesday’s games was deGrom’s 26th consecutive start in which he held the opposing team to three or fewer runs, breaking Leslie “Cole” King’s record of 25 which was set in 1910, according to Anthony Dicomo of MLB.com.

After Tuesday’s game, deGrom is 8-9 with a 1.71 ERA, a career-high 239 strikeouts, and has a 0.95 WHIP. The 1.71 ERA is the best ERA in baseball. Those stats plus having the best ERA in all of baseball should be enough for deGrom to win the Cy Young.

However, deGrom’s record might hurt him when it comes to him winning the Cy Young. He only has eight wins and has just three starts left so he can’t win more than 11 games.

If he does win the Cy Young, it would be the fewest wins by a Cy Young winner since Felix Hernandez won just 13 games in 2010.

Max Scherzer and Aaron Nola, who are deGrom’s competition for the Cy Young award, have 17 and 16 wins respectively. The question now is will that hurt deGrom’s chances of winning?

Mets third baseman Todd Frazier told Brian Lewis of the New York Post that they play for deGrom to win the Cy Young when he pitches.

"“You’ve got to play for something. When he’s out there, we play for him to win the Cy Young. We know he’s going to dominate. I think he broke a record … the more he does that, he’s right up there in winning the thing. We just couldn’t put up runs again.”"

If the Mets are playing for deGrom to win the Cy Young, then they need to start giving him run support. The Mets are 9-17 during deGrom’s record-breaking streak, so they need to put up runs when he pitches.

deGrom should win the Cy Young award. However, if he doesn’t at least he’s got the support of the fans and former Met R.A. Dickey.
