An extended period of success for Amed Rosario is necessary for the New York Mets to believe they have their shortstop of the future.

Amed Rosario came into the big leagues last season with the expectation that he was going to be the new star for the New York Mets. Rosario was ranked in the top five of the lists of minor league prospects by nearly every reputable source.

It hasn’t quite been the transition to the majors that everyone had been hoping for. Rosario has compiled a pedestrian .254 batting average with a .679 OPS over the course of his career to this point.

Many Mets fans were already calling Rosario a bust as his struggles continued through the early parts of this season, and there was even a report that the Mets were considering moving Rosario to the outfield.

However, Rosario has seemed to turn the corner over the last month or so. Since August 1st, and the time of this writing, Rosario has batted .301 while compiling a .788 OPS over that span. Both of those are vast improvements for the 22 year old.

All of this leads to the fact that Mets fans need to be patient when it comes to Rosario.

It could be hard for Mets fans to watch seemingly every prospect the Yankees call up immediately have an impact. Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez both burst onto the scene and helped turn the Yankees back into a perennial World Series contender.

Not every prospect is going to be able to adjust to the major leagues that quickly.

For Rosario, it has taken over a year for him to find his first truly sustained success.

Even though Rosario has been impressive over the last six weeks, I am not ready to say that his success will be one that will continue. This is still the Mets.

Rosario needs to prove that he can keep his average up over the last three weeks and then parlay that into early success for the Mets come April.

Baseball comes with no guarantees. Heck, both World Series teams from just three years ago are now back to the cellars of their respective leagues.

There is no guarantee that Amed Rosario will be able to turn into the type of player that he was hyped up to be as a prospect.

But if Rosario can stay on a path where his success continues, then the long road that is this new Mets rebuild will see itself get a little shorter.
