Task #3 Shift focus to the “new baseball”

This one is harder to explain, but hear me out. The Mets always seem to have this desire to build what they want, but not always what they need.

Even in their last World Series run their monster pitching and nice complement of side pieces lost to the mighty analytical Royals.

So, that is why the Mets’ next GM should begin focusing on the analytics. Bolster the system to guys who can get on base, steal bases, be clutch, have players who can do it all, still have good pitching, a better bullpen, and just a complete team.

The kind of team that is the best at noting but outstanding at everything.

This does not mean that the Mets cannot build around deGrom, he is just one pitcher and the Mets could get players like this around him. It also doest not mean Alonso is not part of the picture somehow.

However, if you look at teams like the 2015 Royals, 2016 Cubs, and the 2017 Astros all those teams focused on analytics. Having one player who could do it all and everyone else capable of doing what is needed.

That is not the Mets’ fault, it is simply the new baseball. Now, the Mets finally have the chance to be a part of it.

The Mets are already kind of ahead in this department. They hired the new fresh minded Mickey Callaway and moved on from the old-school Terry Collins.

The next GM should begin to focus on the new baseball, analytics. They need to bolster the system and begin getting players who do not simply fill needs but have a purpose and role on both sides of the ball. Essentially get themselves a bunch of Jeff McNeil‘s

It is obviously much easier said then done, but can still be done.

The Mets can still focus on having the best pitching, but as we are seeing, can no longer rely on it, it is not working anymore.

The Mets need to stop doing what they want to build, and start building what they need to build.

Sure, this could take a while, but it could also work quickly if done right and if trades are made correctly.

The next GM focusing on analytics and having that mindset early can do wonders for the Mets. Plus, doing it this can way can save the Mets a lot of money which we know they love doing.
