New York Mets: Three things the next general manager should do right away
Task #1 Reassuring Jacob deGrom is a big part of the future
The New York Mets have always been built on pitching. You do not need me to tell you that. Also, Jacob deGrom is a really solid pitcher. You also didn’t need me to tell you that.
So, let’s put the two together and the next new GM can have his first assignment of the job.
Since deGrom is still under team control for a few more years, demanding a new GM come in and extend his contract so soon would be a tad extreme.
However, just because the Mets might not do that does not mean the new GM cannot reassure deGrom is not a big part of the future.
This year, deGrom was rumored to be in trade talks. Sure, they all could have been simply rumors, but it was still alarming.
Also, the big thing with deGrom this year is that the Mets cannot win when he pitches. He gets little to no help and they have just now slowly started to turn the corner there.
So, the new GM should publicly make it clear that deGrom is the ace of the future. They need to be careful with signing players and make sure they can get talent around him.
If the new GM comes in and treats deGrom as someone who is not important, they will regret it.
It is tough to show someone they are important to the future without that big money contract, so let’s not even rule that out copletely.
However, an early task of the next GM is to either reassure deGrom he is the top guy, or even start to make moves around him to prove it.
Jacob deGrom deserves to a player that this team builds around and with the way he carries himself and how hard he plays shows he wants to be here.
The next Mets GM should reassure, in at least some type of grandiose way, that deGrom is an integral part to the Mets and that deGrom will be a part of whatever they are trying to build for years to come.
