The stretch is upon us New York Yankees fans, we have entered the final month of the 2018 MLB Season and anything can happen.

The New York Yankees have been playing from behind the Red Sox all season, and while at it, September is the month the Yankees can finally turn that deficit around.

September is the most important month of the Yankees’ season by far. September holds timely matchups against their rival from Boston.

This means that the month of September has the potential to be either catastrophic or fantastic for the Yankees.

More from Empire Writes Back

This month, the Yankees have the potential to turn their massive deficit in the East into a microscopic deficit as they face the Red Sox six times over the course of the month.

Not only that, but they have already played their likely Wild Card opponent in the Oakland A’s on the road too.

The Yankees and Athletics faced off three times to in the beginning of September, but unfortunately it did not go the way the Yankees had hoped.

The Athletics took two of the three games winning the series by an overall score of 15-10. The only bright side of the series was Luke Voit who had two home runs in the three games while he stood in for Greg Bird.

This puts the season series at 3-3 as the two played back in May in the Bronx. The Yanks took two of the three but tied the series when it came to runs, at 18-18.

If this is who the Yankees end up playing come the Wild Card Game, they could be in trouble.

The Athletics ace right now is Mike Fiers who has had a somewhat respectable season boasting a 3.36 ERA, with an 11-6 record and a 1.172 WHIP. Fiers has been rather consistent for Oakland since being acquired from Detroit in August.

The Athletics best pitcher right now has faced off against the Yankees three times this season, twice for Detroit and once for Oakland.

In two of the three matchups this season, Fiers’ team took the game including last weeks matchup in Oakland.

If the Yankees and A’s do end up facing off in October with a spot in the ALDS on the line, you can expect the Yankees to face off against Mike Fiers.

Before we get to October though, there are still a lot of questions left to be answered in September.

Questions like, who will start, Andrew McCutchen or Brett Gardner when the Yankees are fully healthy?

What will a fully healthy Yankees team look like?

Can the Yankees close the gap with Boston? What happens with Luke Voit when Greg Bird is back?

These questions among others will be answered (hopefully) by the end of September, just in time for the postseason. So, hold on Yankee fans. As crazy as things have been, they are only about to get more intense.
