New York Giants: Giants will end up regretting waiving Roger Lewis as season approaches
By Sam Friedman
During roster cuts, the New York Giants parted ways with Roger Lewis. Lewis was a wide receiver on the team. As the season begins with a difficult schedule, the Giants might regret that decision.
Roger Lewis has not contributed a ton to the New York Giants, but is still a solid enough to merit some respect. I do believe that he is a better player than Russell Shepard, Kaelin Clay, and Cody Latimer and they all made the team.
I figure he already had some pull with the team because he hangs out with Odell Beckham and Sterling Shepard all the time. Lewis could have become popular by association.
“Otto”, as Lewis’ friends like to call him, highlight moments on the Giants were occasional, but always special. The first one that comes to mind is his catch vs. the Chiefs, literally just last year.

As the iconic saying goes, “great moments are born from great opportunity.” That bodes well for Lewis, well at least it did. He made some great moments in the little chances he had with the Giants.
One other highlight reel play to note, is his one-handed catch on the sideline vs. the Cardinals. The game meant nothing to the Giants, but the catch showed had some made skill and one that should have saved his job for this season.
So, why cut this guy?
Here are a few reasons right off the top of my head as to why I would have chosen Lewis over these other three receivers:
- Lewis is 24 years old, younger than all three, (Russell) Shepard, Clay and Latimer. If it’s even a close debate, why not just go younger?
- At one point, not long ago, Lewis was a top flight receiver. He was semi-finalist for the Biletnikoff Trophy during his time at Bowling Green.
- He’s very good friends with the best receivers on the team.
The last point is the one I want to specifically focus on. Lewis, Shepard and Beckham Jr. are very close friends. Beckham Jr. and Lewis were even in Shepard’s wedding party.
This looked like the best wedding of all time. If I were a Giants fan, I would love to see that my receivers were close friends. Players at the same position could show jealousy towards one another.
This trio built each other up, and supported the team. Getting rid of one of the three members definitely doesn’t sit well with the other two.
I’m not on the team so I can’t speak from experience, but if someone cut my friend who was better than some the guys on the team, I would be mad.
Also, considering the Giants have a relatively difficult start to the year schedule wise, having a team that is already close would have helped the team’s chemistry during all the traveling and journeying.
Here’s to hoping Saquon Barkley can fill in the friendship and build the same chemistry with the stars players that Roger Lewis was forced to leave behind.
