New York Jets: Davis Webb signed to practice squad
The New York Jets changed quarterback on the practice squad, releasing John Wolford and signing former Giants QB Davis Webb.
The New York Jets have made an adjustment to their practice squad, and it involves the quarterback position:
Interesting move, is it not? Making a move that involves the team that shares the stadium is always an eye-opening situation, at least on the surface.
And on the surface, it is eye-opening. Are the Jets “trolling” the Giants? Why would they bring in a guy that couldn’t sustain a job he held for years prior?
Are the Jets just trying to get under the skin of the Giants? Could be, but it is not an unreasonable move to make either.

Right now it is just a practice squad move. It isn’t something that will exactly affect the team any time soon, barring injury.
But, look at the Jets quarterback situation going forward.
The only backup quarterback is Josh McCown and he is 39 years old. He is also on just a one-year contract.
The Jets are going to need a backup long-term. They aren’t just going to fill the team with veterans forever. Eventually Sam Darnold will be one.
Davis Webb has been a backup quarterback for three years.
The Jets may have just signed a long-term number two quarterback. It’s not as if Davis Webb is completely incompetent.
If Webb could eventually be the backup, that locks down a position for several years.
Imagine not talking about the quarterback position for several years. Odd, isn’t it?
Of course it will depend upon how Webb looks on the practice field. This isn’t guaranteed to be anything more than a trolling move by the Jets.
However, it could become a strong move for the Jets in the coming years.
It can’t hurt to try.
