Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria was traded to the New York Yankees Friday night. Even though Didi Gregorius is still out, the Yanks don’t need Hechavarria.

The New York Yankees acquired shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates late Friday night. The Yankees also get cash considerations and will get cash to pay the rest of Hechavarria’s contract that the Pirates don’t pay.

The Pirates will get a player to be named later or cash in return. Hechavarria is hitting .254 with four home runs and 29 RBIs this season.

Hechavarria will severe as a backup for Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius.  Gregorius has been on the disabled list with a left heel contusion since August 20. Gleyber Torres has played shortstop while Didi has been out.

More from New York Yankees

While Torres is hot at the plate, he has struggled played shortstop. Maybe the Yankees wanted to get someone else besides Torres to play short until Didi gets back.

If that’s the case, then I don’t see why the Yankees made this move because it makes no sense and the Yankees don’t need Hechavarria.

I can understand the Yankees wanting to get a shortstop since Torres has struggled at the position.

However, they didn’t need to go out and get a shortstop from another team. If they don’t want Torres at shortstop anymore, then they should put Ronald Torreyes at short until Didi returns.

Torreyes is the Yankees best option for shortstop if Didi is out and they don’t want Torres at short.

Another reason why the Yankees don’t need Hechavarria is because Didi is expected to be back soon. Didi could come off of the DL this weekend and be  activated on Monday, according to Pete Caldera of North Jersey Record.

If Didi gets activated on Monday, then Hechavarria would then just be a bench player for the Yankees. He would only get playing time if Didi got hurt again.

Hechavarria is the second player to be traded to the Yankees this week, joining Andrew McCutchen.

Getting McCutchen was good for the Yankees because he will help the Yankees outfield while Aaron Judge is out.

Getting Hechavarria on the other hand, was just stupid because they don’t need him since they have players that can play short if they need to.
