Here are some brief observations from the New York Jets final preseason game.

The New York Jets finished up the preseason on Friday night with a 10-9 loss in the annual battle with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Todd Bowles and the gang got through it with no major injuries which is always the most important thing. It was also the final time for the “bubble” players to make an impression prior to the rosters being reduced to 53.

Here are some brief observations as we put a bow around the 2018 preseason and get ready to see the upcoming cuts:

Sam Darnold is your starting quarterback. It’s not that we didn’t know it, but technically Todd Bowles hasn’t announced it yet. The fact that Darnold didn’t take a snap on Friday night clears up any other questions.

Derrick Jones locked his roster spot up. He flashed often in camp and finished up Friday with a pick and a pass defense on a deep ball.

Fullback or no fullback? This one wasn’t so clear after the game.

Lawrence Thomas saw a significant number of snaps and caught two passes out of the backfield.

The only tight end that made significant plays was Clive Walford, catching three passes.

Did Thomas do enough to earn back a spot, or do the Jets go with four tight ends? It’s still unclear.

Cannon to stay. Trenton Cannon locked up that third position in the running back room.

Why? He cleaned things up from last week. He posted an explosive 31 yard punt return.

Cannon also got the longest look on the ground, carrying the ball 11 times for 29 yards. Despite the drops in the passing game I really do believe the coaches have seen enough to keep him around.

Next. The team belongs to Sam. dark

Nickerson got some giddy up. We finally got to see Parry Nickerson take the field against the Eagles and he looked good. He flaunted his speed on his one sack, and will make a good addition to the defensive backfield.

J.J. Wilcox with a nice game. Wilcox did all he could to earn himself a place on this team with a forced fumble and an interception. Was it enough? It will be a close call but he certainly put enough on tape to entice another team if not the Jets.

Jason Myers earned the kicking job. With two field goals including one from 58 yards out, this position has been decided.

Stay tuned for the roster cuts as they will be very interesting.
