New York Jets: Three surprises likely to make the 53 man roster
Trenton Cannon
It has been an interesting preseason for the sixth round draft pick. Trenton Cannon has gone from a Division II draft pick to a player making an impact at the NFL level in the preseason.
The initial expectation was for Cannon to be in play for a return position, but he has muffed kicks and punts all preseason long. Granted the one he lost against the Giants was a strip but he hasn’t exactly protected the football well on special teams.
But there are a couple of “tells” that indicate that Cannon still has a shot to make this team.
The first was when he was back to return a kickoff against the Giants after he fumbled. They showed a confidence in the young player that frankly was surprising. Personally, I felt he had returned his last kick, at least for the Jets.
Cannon also still got action in the running game. He was a dual threat, with 16 carries for 63 yards. He added seven receptions for 35 yards.
Many think that the fumbling issues will keep him off this team to at least the practice squad. It might be just a feel, but based on the action he has gotten I believe Cannon will make the 53.
We will see how he looks on Thursday night as he should see some extended action against the Eagles.
