New York Giants: Three notes from first three preseason games
Easier to game plan around flaws thanks to these reps
The New York Giants are still a team that is coming off a three win season. So to say they only have a few flaws is a bit ambitious.
However, the preseason so far might make the regular season game planning a tad easier for the coaching staff.
The Giants are still good run stoppers. The WR core, if healthy, will be tough to stop, and the secondary is filled with players trying to get back to elite form.
But, there are still issues, even if they are already improved from last year with this team.
We talked about Saquon in the previous slide, but an issue with the Giants offense is that it is lackluster without him.
Teams will double down on OBJ if he is the biggest threat. Sterling Shepard cannot possibly carry the passing game by himself despite coming off some respectable performances this preseason.
The Giants will need Saquon out there to be another playmaker. He will likely be out there so it might not matter, but having a problem of relying on a rookie to be an extra playmaker is something to consider. It can easily not be a problem, but the Giants have yet to get to that.
Also, Will Hernandez is coming off some respectable games as well. The Giants offensive line is still something to worry about though.
Overall, the offensive line is much better. As long as they can buy a few extra seconds Saquon is good enough and Eli is smart enough to make it all work.
But, there are still too many question marks about Ereck Flowers and the overall depth of the line. It is something the Giants should adjust to this year considering its a little too late to bolster that right now.
The Giants LB core is another question mark. Being exposed a little bit this preseason already. Overall the Giants run defense is solid. Even the pass defense as unit will hold its own. But, if Alec Ogeltree does not become the player the Giants traded for it creates a flaw.
The Giants, like most teams, need athletic linebacker who can do it all. Cover, pass rush, block, whatever. Certain players fit certain roles and experimentation can often lead to figuring it all out.
However, the Giants need to get more pass coverage out their line backers.
Overall, the Giants seemed to have improved where they needed to coming into the preseason. However, there are still issues.
But, it is idea that the Giants kind of know what their biggest flaws are now. They can do their best to work around them and put the best possible team out there in Week 1 vs the Jaguars.
